How To Remove Scratches From Auto Glass From Home Equipments | HCB

Minor scratches on the windshield and windows of the vehicle can sometimes be connected to the house with basic supplies. (Here's what we think of the "do-it-yourself" approach to window repair). If the vehicle window has shallow scratches, one of the following three products can help you remove or reduce the scratches. Here is a step-by-step guide on how to apply these products.
  • Check the depth.
  • Gather supplies.
  • Clean the scratches.
  • Mark the area of the scratch.
  • Prepare to repair the product.
  • Apply repaired product.
  • Clean windows.

Step 1: Check depth.

First, check the depth of the scratch that has escaped with your nails. These do-it-yourself applications only work with light scratches, which are usually too shallow for your nails to hold on to. If you can feel the scratches as you do your nails, you may need to call a car window repair professional to check the appearance of the scratches. They have more advanced tools and compounds that can handle deeper scratches and cracks.

Step 2: Collect supplies.

Assuming the scratches on the vehicle are shallow, you can collect the necessary supplies. You need to do this:
  • Water.
  • Window cleaner
  • A soft cloth.
  • Shovel.
  • Small bowl.
  • Mark or dry wipe the ribbon.
  • Drill with a polished rubber wheel.

(Some of this work is optional, but makes repairs easier).

You will also need to scrape the repaired product itself, which offers three options:
  1. Clear acrylic nail polish - Many people have this, but only work on the shallowest scratches.
  2. Alumina - This is the best product for most small scratches, but few people have it on hand.
  3. Baking soda and white toothpaste - works, but usually requires multiple applications. Acrylic nail polish remover can be used instead of explicit nail polish, but it is just as effective as most people don't have a makeup remover. Chromium oxide is a sealant and varnish used in glass, metal, and ceramics. It is often referred to as "jeweler's red" and is relatively inexpensive for the amount required.

Step 3: Clean scratches.

Before repairing scratches, make sure that no debris interferes with the connection between the service product and the glass. Thoroughly clean the scratched area with glass cleaner and a soft cloth. (There is no reason to clean all of the glass at this stage, as fingerprints on the glass and some products can be obtained when the scratches are repaired).

Step 4: Mark the striped area.

As repairs progress, it may be difficult to see the glass scratched. So you always know where you should work, marking the striped area. The easiest way is to describe the scratches of the dry wipe mark on the (full) side opposite the glass. Alternatively, you can place one piece of tape on the other side.

Step 5: Prepare to repair the product.

It's time to prepare the repaired product you're using. This will vary slightly depending on the product you are using, and if you are using an acrylic product, you can skip this step.
For alumina, mix the powder with water in a small bowl with a spatula. Mix these two ingredients until they form a mud, which is the consistency of Elmer glue. Keep excess water at hand to prevent the mud from starting to dry up during the repair.
For baking soda and white toothpaste, use about 1 teaspoon of baking soda and a quarter tube of standard toothpaste. Mix with water until the sludge forms and the soda is no longer detectable. Keep all items at hand because you may need to mix more items for other applications.

Step 6: Apply the repaired product.

When the product is ready, you can start repairing scratches. The exact steps you need to take depend on the product you are using. (When using a specific service product, be sure to follow the accompanying instructions.)
If you use acrylic removers or nail polish, fill the scratches and wipe off any excess stains. Products should be dry hard and clear and should have minimum polishing requirements.
If you use chromium oxide, fill the scratches, and start gently polishing. Drill bits and rubber polishing wheels make polishing easier. Continue to fill the scratches with more chromium oxide and polishing until the results are clear and smoothly repaired. For best results, apply chromium oxide to the cloth and then to the strip. If the solution is elsewhere on the glass, it may actually cause small scratches.
If using a homemade mixture, follow the instructions for alumina. However, when polished it is softer and is intended to pass through more applications.

Step 7: Clean the window.

When the service is complete, wipe off all remaining repair products and clean the windows. You can clean the whole window now. The result should be a transparent glass with no scratches.
